Bleed refers to the portion of your design that extends beyond the final trim size of your printed piece.
It's crucial because printing and trimming processes aren't perfectly precise. By extending your design past the trim line, you ensure that no white edges appear when the product is cut.
The safe text area is the space within the trim lines where all critical elements (text, logos, important images) should be placed.
This prevents them from being trimmed off during the cutting process.
The trim size is the final, finished size of your printed piece after it's been cut.
Resolution refers to the level of detail in an image, measured in dots per inch (DPI). For print, a resolution of 300 DPI is generally recommended for sharp, high-quality results.
Lower resolutions (like 72 DPI, common for web images) will appear blurry or pixelated when printed.
CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black) is the standard color mode for commercial printing.
RGB (Red, Green, Blue) is used for digital displays. Converting RGB to CMYK is essential to avoid unexpected color shifts in your printed product.
High-resolution PDFs are the most common and preferred format. Other acceptable formats may include TIFF, EPS, and high-resolution JPGs.
Calibrating your monitor and using a color-managed workflow are crucial. If color accuracy is critical, consider requesting a physical proof from your printer.
A proof is a sample print that allows you to review the layout, colors, and overall appearance of your design before the full print run.
